Hampshire Business Awards Winners

The winners 2013

The Blake Lapthorn Sustainability Award

The Blake Lapthorn Sustainability Award was presented to the University of Winchester.  Established in 1840, the university combines heritage with innovative learning and teaching.  It was up an impressive 24 places in The Sunday Times League Table 2014 to 57th and rated the 10th best university in the South East.

Manoj Styche-Patel of Blake Lapthorn said that the University of Winchester, although the smallest university in the UK, is at the forefront of initiatives to reduce its own environmental impact and is an organisation that actively promotes environmentally responsible behaviour amongst staff, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders.  As such, it was a very worthy winner of this award.

RBS Management Team of the Year

Scooping the RBS Management Team of the Year award was Lakesmere Ltd.  Winchester-based Lakesmere is a leading roofing, cladding and facade specialist contractor, offering its clients a complete design, installation and management service.  In the financial year 2012/13, group turnover reached £54m with plans for significant growth in 2013/14 due to on-going success in international markets, the creation of a subsidiary company McMullen Facades and the establishment of a dedicated flat roofing division.  Lakesmere is the largest installer of Kalzip standing seam roofing in Europe and the Middle East.

According to Dan Salanson of the Royal Bank of Scotland, Lakesmere's management team has successfully steered the group through difficult sector conditions, which has seen the demise of some of their sector peers.  The team has presided over international expansion and acquisition which has resulted in continued profitable growth.  The growth has been down to the Lakesmere team's prudent stance, clear vision and well executed strategy.

The University of Southampton Technical Innovation Award

The University of Southampton Technical Innovation Award was awarded to United Shield International Ltd.  Andover-based United Shield International is one of the leading global manufacturers of personal ballistic and fragmentation protection and fragmentation equipment.  United Shield's management team and staff have more than 80 years collective specialist experience and expertise of designing and manufacturing ballistic helmets, body armour, ballistic shields, hard armour plates and a variety of other ballistic and fragmentation protection products.

Don Spalinger of the University of Southampton noted that a few years ago, responding decisively to a significant business threat from its large market leader on the one hand and from commoditised products on the other, United Shield established a well-funded Technology Centre which has led to the company becoming a major international Explosive Ordnance Disposal systems provider.  One of a number of new products developed by the Technology Centre is a bomb disposal suit that has proved to be a real commercial success.

The KPMG Company of the Year Award

The KPMG Company of the Year Award was won by Chandler's Ford-based Selwood Ltd, the largest privately owned UK company serving the construction and allied industries and recognised as one of the leading pump and plant, hire and sales companies in the country.  The firm has designed and manufactured mobile site pumps since 1955 and now has the quietest and most environmentally friendly pumps on the market with 70% exported through a worldwide distribution network.

In awarding the prize to Selwood, Will Smith, Senior Partner at KPMG Southampton, said the company had seized an opportunity to re-examine its business and set itself a new vision for the future that required a significant change in the culture of the company to succeed.

Hampshire Apprentice - CBI Recognition Award

This year's awards had an additional category: Hampshire Apprentice - CBI Recognition Award.  The award recognises an outstanding individual who has seized the opportunity to find and excel in a role at a Hampshire or Isle of Wight-based business.  Apprenticeships play a key role in boosting skill levels across the local economy.  This particular HBA category looked for an apprentice who had demonstrated achievement, advancement, employability and initiative, and is proudly sponsored by the CBI.  The winner is Luke Davis, for his work at Rapanui Clothing Ltd.
